When do designers typically start their careers?
I'm just barely getting off the ground as a designer, and hope to go into the costume/lolita and possibly the bridal industry. I'm 21, and /technically/ started sewing at around age 16. However at the rate that I'm going with my career plans, I won't officially launch my line as other than commissions until I'm around 23.
So, do any of you know the average age that a fashion designer starts? Am I going into the industry too late?
Using designers in the broadest sense most of the successful designers I know started doing piecework of one sort or another in their teens -- for friends and stuff and over time learned enough about freelancing to launch their brand, and it took between five and in one case 23 years for them to learn. I'm pretty secure that the average age of a clothing or fabric designer launching his or her own line is over 23 because there is so much to learn. Whether you are going into the industry too late depends on a lot of factors including what you expect to accomplish there. You probably aren't going in too late to make a life there if that is what you want to do.
