why,in medieval/tudor portraits do people not have eyelashes?
I've been looking at these paintings and no one has eyelashes. why is this?
I think they do, but they were not perceived as fashionable in those times, as they are today.
In the later Middle Ages it was the fashion to have a high and broad brow, and fashionable women plucked their hairlines to help the effect. If you look at the portraits, it often seems that they had no eyebrows, either, so the "hairy" face was not considered attractive as it is nowadays. I seem to remember that Chaucer, in his "Troilus and Criseyde" (late 1300s) described Criseyde as having eyebrows that met in the middle, which must have been considered a sign of beauty then.
Here's a portrait of Elizabeth Woodville, queen of Edward IV of England in the late 1400s. Note that she has eyebrows, but it seems no eyelashes, and her forehead is fashionable plucked. She was described as a great beauty.
